If you're just setting up your business Instagram or feeling a bit lost with what to post and how to show up, you're not alone. It can feel like everyone else knows exactly what they’re doing, but the truth is we all started somewhere. . . and most of us learned as we went.

Here’s some tips that might help.

1. Set up the basics

Make sure your username is easy to find, your profile photo is clear, and your bio tells people what you do and how they can shop or book. Include your location if it matters for your business. Use a link tool (like Linktree or Milkshake) if you have more than one thing to share. I hate having to go searching through a bunch of posts to find out if a business is even local to me, so please don’t make people work for the info.

2. Don’t stress about your first posts

Just start. A post introducing yourself or your business is always a good idea. A photo of your products, your workspace, or even a selfie with a quick caption about what you’re building is more than enough. Don’t overthink it.

3. Stories are your secret weapon

You don’t need to talk to camera if it’s not your thing, (it’s not mine!) but stories are a great place to connect more casually. Share updates, behind-the-scenes moments, or ask your followers questions. Use polls, stickers, and countdowns to keep things fun and interactive.

4. Focus on people, not perfection

Instagram rewards connection, not just polished content. Let people see your process, your passion, and your personality. You don’t need to have it all figured out or have everything planned and curated. Just be consistent and honest.

5. Save your best info to Highlights

Use Highlights to group stories that answer common questions or show off what you do. Think categories like “About Me,” “How to Order,” “Customer Love,” or “Behind the Scenes.” This makes it easy for people to find the info they’re looking for - I’m always so grateful when these things are accessible. And when I find a new brand to follow, I love having a snoop through their highlights.

6. Don’t compare yourself to others

The small businesses you admire probably started right where you are now. They’ve learned along the way, and you will too. Be proud of starting. That first post is a big deal. And celebrate the small wins. First 50 followers? Post about it! I still get excited when I see these posts and stories.
