How to Write an “About Me” That Doesn’t Make You Cringe
Let’s be honest; writing about yourself is awkward (well it is for me). You either end up sounding like you’re applying for a job you don’t want, or like you’ve blacked out mid-sentence and forgotten what your business even does. But here’s the truth: your “About Me” is one of the most powerful tools you’ve got.
It’s not just a formality. It’s your chance to connect with your people. The ones who care that your candles are hand-poured while your kids nap, or that your jewellery line started as a hobby after heartbreak. The ones who want to support the human behind the brand, not just the product.
So how do you write it? You talk like you would if you were messaging a new friend. You tell a tiny story. You explain why you care about what you make. You say where you’re based (yes, people care!), and what makes your stuff a little bit special. You can even add something random and charming, like your love of crime podcasts or your obsession with iced coffee. Those small things stick.
What you don’t need:
A full life story.
Fancy words like “bespoke” or “artisanal” unless you really mean them.
A list of qualifications unless they’re directly relevant.
Keep it short. Keep it human. And for the love of all that is locally made, include a photo of you if you’re comfortable. It doesn’t have to be professionally lit or posed. Just a face. A smile. Something that says, “Hi, this is me.”
If you’re still stuck, here’s a cheat code: ask a friend to describe you and your biz in three sentences. Use that as your starting point.
Because here’s the thing - people want to buy from people. So let them see you. You’re not just selling soap or earrings or sourdough starter kits. You’re inviting people into something you’ve built with your own two hands. That’s powerful.
And you? You’re more interesting than you think.
